We dream of Peace, but end with War. Why? Themes below are from Humancafe on War, World Peace, and the Unity
of Agreement between Human Beings. No one can force us to have peace, but everyone can keep us from war.

"World order can be founded only on an unshakable
consciousness of the oneness of mankind, a
spiritual truth
which all the human sciences confirm.
Anthropology, physiology, psychology, recognize
only one human species,
albeit infinitely varied in the secondary aspects
of life. Recognition of this truth requires
abandonment of prejudice
--prejudice over everykind--race, class, color,
creed, nation, sex, degree of material
civilization, everything which
enables people to consider themselves superior to
others." --The Universal House of Justice, "The
Promise of World Peace", pp.28-29.

Flags at Half-tone.
I had a dream where the whole Earth was like a
giant magnet, a ball of energy to which all living
things
gravitated, filled with so much love that
everything literally died to be born here. The
whole planet, as only
one of many, was filled with this love energy, the
more of it there was the more there was life on
it, and
you could feel it like a distant pull from space.
It was beautiful. We hated to die from it, and
could not
wait to be born into it. It filled me with so much
love for my world, but it also made me aware that
there
were other worlds that envied us, because their
love energy there was still weak.
In the same dream, I also dreamt that all of our
flags were at half-tone, not the brilliant war
colors we now sport,
but more muted, like in pastel colors of peace.
What does it all mean? --ida, U.S.A.

We live and we die, and in that short life span we
have so much
potential for the good. So how is it we can be so
attached to our own
particular cause that we would commit hundreds

millions to their graves? Was not each one born a

loving them and started
to hate them instead?... WHAT ARE THEY DOING IN

Prayer for the Balkans
O Thou Kind Almighty, we supplicate at the throne
of grace for mercy for our sins; mercy for the
great destruction
of life, the blood that has been shed in the
Balkans, the children that are being made orphans,
the mothers losing their
dear sons, the sons who have become fatherless,
the cities that have been destroyed, the many
hearts that have been
filled with blood, the many tears that are being
shed and the many spirits that are in a state of
agitation! O Lord, be merciful,
extinguish this spirit of war, this consuming
fire, this peril, this gloomy darkness, from the
face of the earth. Cement together
these hearts. Let the Sun of truth dawn upon all.
O Lord! This world is dark. Guide us toward a
brilliant light; the horizons
are gloomy with the clouds of war; disperse these
impenetrable clouds. Grant us a holiness and calm;
dispose of these quarrels;
illuminate the horizon of life, so that the sun of
real loyalty may shine with His rays. May these
dark hearts become illuminated,
may these blind eyes become open, may there deaf
ears become gifted with hearing. O Lord, cause Thy
divine justice to appear
in this world. Summon these people to the banquet
of international peace, so that they may live
together in the utmost state of love.
May all the religions and all nations embrace each
other in this spirit of universal kindness, and
may hatred be forgotten. O Lord!
Confirm this just government in the establishment
of peace, so that it may hold aloft the banner of
reconciliation in the Balkans.
May the light of love shine and flame forth
undefiled. O Lord!, thou art Almighty, thou are
Merciful, thou are Clement, thou are Kind! -
Abdu'l-Baha.

Though people say we are all one; they first need
to look at the world around them. People slaughter
each other
without question and no one cares to see it end.
What is wrong with humans. Can't everyone see that
we are all
made of the same molecules and genetic framework.
It is stupid to hate someone simply because of the
way they
look, talk or even feel. Humans need to get a clue
and treat others with compassion and dignity.

THE FIRST SUNFLOWERS PLANTED
------------------------------
In Praha a strong group has established around the
Praha center for Peace, they have started their
own
national coordination already. One of the many
activities in the last days is planting
sunflowerseeds so that they
will be able to sell them in a couple of mounths
and raise a bit of money and attention in the
summer that still
refugees are in Albania and Macedonia (and
elsewhere). It is indeed every day more clear that
this living
situation wouldn't change soon. The (official)
reports I have got from Kosov@ or rather about
Kosov@ shows that
even when the war stops today it will take a long
time before people can return to their (new)
houses. Therefore
we try to build up this action not for the next
weeks, but for the months, years to come.

We can continue to watch the devasting effects of
the bombings,
we can wait passively for it to explode into
another world war,
or we can let it be known that we are against the
bombings,
that the escalation of these violences are an
inevitable path to a bigger war.
Turn on the lights, during the day, of automobiles
and other vehicles until
the bombings are replaced with non-violent methods
that can yield to better results.
Turn on the lights for the innocent victims of
violence everywhere.

it`s stupid to have wars and it`s so sad when so
many people die. I

"One."
"In the end, we are one planet, one people. Each
one of us carries in him
or her self a fragment of every other, and this is
how we are
joined. For those who will have the opportunity to
travel and meet our
other lives throughout the world, it will become
immediately
obvious. We are not so different from one another.
For some reason, we
had been living under some spell that, like a
dilatorious
planetary fog, has kept us apart and ignorant of
each other. We are all
one, and I sincerely hope that in the future this
uniqueness, of
each one of us, will bring us together into a
common bond rather than
tear us apart. We are friends, and this is
innately born in us.
Witness children. That we later fall out into
suspicion and fear is
regrettable, most likely a byproduct of an ego
that has kept us tied to
an illusion. We are not so different. In me is all
of you, as in you is all
of me. I do not feel this is so profound a
statement. Rather it is
spoken from the heart. Once we are free to love
one another, this
statement will no longer seem strange or alien to
us. We are all born
into this world together, travel together, and
then within a short time,
die from it together. We are very much together on
a small planet.
We are one."

This is from a diary of a Serbian dissident writer
that has chosen to remain in Belgrade:
"Who will drive us Crazy?
by BILJANA SRBLJANOVIC
BELGRADE
4 MAY - my life now resemble to "Games without
frontiers ." It is
a daily enterprise: when there is electrical
current, there
is no water runnin; when the water arrives, the
electrical current goes.
More and more often there is neither of the two.
When, for a very short time,
both the aqueduct and the distribution of energy
electrical are both available,
it is the four of morning, and I am sleeping. In
the morning,
I put all my life in two plastic bags and begin to
hunt for
apartments. In these days I have three permanent
addresses and many
temporary addresses: naturally my apartment, then
the one of my
parents, then the houses of the friends and
relatives who by now are
themselves transferred for some time into
countries with
more intelligent governments.
Belgrade has been emptied, in this last month, and
the street sweepers
say that that the amount of trash is like in
August, when people go on
vacation. But this time nobody has left for the
beach; nearly 400,000
inhabitants have left Belgrade, trying to escape
in the near countries or other
parts of Serbia. Those that iremained, like me,
every day we change our
address. First to be in danger tare the young,
skillful men wanted
for the military service. From the first day of
the raid, the majority of
young people of the city, for fear of being
drafted into the force,
are hidden in apartments with disowned addresses,
therefore the
military police cannot find them. The problem is
that also their friends
can't find them, because as soon as the address of
a young man is
discovered by the police, he has to move himself
to a safer place.
Also families with small children, who live close
to the
NATO target, have changed houses. All choose the
better zones,
lodging with the relatives; the children are left
in one apartment,
and the parents move to another. This game of
inner "immigration " is
becoming still more complicated, because the
apartments where electricty
still works are near the palace, politica or
militaryl centers, therefore more
exposed to the risk of the bombs. Other zones of
the
city, they are safer, but they are in the dark.
I have chosen the risk: the place where I find
myself has
electricity, but is located near important centers
of communications.
While I turn the channels of the TV, waiting for
the water to arrive, I notice
that I am measuring how much space there is under
the bed, and how much time I need
to hide under in case I hear a missile arrive. I
try and
try again, diving and rolling on the floor;
keeping an eye on the TV. I see a
program on RaiTre (Italian TV). It is a
documentary:
" Yugoslavia, the death of one nation ", describes
the destruction of the State
in which I was born. I put to the test my
knowledge of Italian,
in an effort to understand the comments of the
hosts in the studio.
I listen to those things that I already well know:
the Evil
was planned a decade ago, here, in my beloved
city, when
the dictator of our life had taken the right to
decide also our death.
I roll up the carpet and I put it in a corner (it
is easier to dive under the bed if the floor
remains clear -- therefore in one jump I will find
myself under
the bed, if I need) and I follow the end of the
program.
I hear clearly the voice of the general and
criminal Mladic, than in the name of
the Big Leader they had bombed Sarajevo.
Mladic yells the order: " Bomb until they have
been driven crazy! ". The host in
the studio finds an analogy, saying that what NATO
is doing seems to answer
to the same command: " Bomb them until they go
crazy! ".
How to react? To go crazy in name of the
nationalism, or in the name
of the democracy: You choose.

I would like to propose a question to help me
understand the criminal. If microdecisions are
powered by passions rather than compassions, does
this reflect the criminal mind? Do microdecisions
reflect our inner being? If so what is the
microdecision that causes fear?

--------------------------------------------------
----------------------

09 Jun 1999

"Faith or Fear?"
"Where there is no faith, there is fear." This was
said to me by my friend Mark S. one evening over
dinner at the Alta Coffe Shop, Newport Beach, Ca.
We were discussing what drive the criminal mind.
Was it fear and passion, or a lack of faith in
something bigger, like religion or God? If
microdecisions are reflected in all we do, then
when we do from fear rather than love and faith,
are we falling away from a higher self into that
of a lower self, into crime? Or gambling? Or
hurting and destroying things, even ourselves? Or
maybe when we pray, our micromind is also
affected. Perhaps prayer is the answer, and the
criminal mind, in his or her anger and passions,
has turned away from the passion of love. If we
pray for the criminal, and the criminal prays, do
we bring into their lives some sort of redemption,
though we are blind to what or how this is, and
cause some magic thing to happen to them to bring
them back into the good? Away from fear? But then:
"What is the microdecision that causes fear?" (see
above) Abuse, pain, hand me down fears, lack of
trust, lack of faith? I do not know. In our
country, United States of America, where we had
seen an increase in crime over the years when we
had witnessed a decrease in faith, in moral
values, then maybe it makes sense: What causes
fear is a lack of faith. Can this fear be replaced
by compassion, love, prayer? I think so. We can
overcome fear with faith.

Did we (USA/NATO) just fight a just war? Is it
justice to go and kill people for the sake of
stopping them from killing others? Or are we
simply stepping into their fight, which was not
our own? Saint Augustine believed it is more
important to defend others than it is to defend
oneself. So was it our "Christian" duty to help
the Albanians in Kosovo by killing Serbs? Or did
we fail, by assisting one side against the other,
and instead interrupted only temporarily a feud
that had been going on for centuries? Would it not
have been a far better thing to have intervened to
stop the feud without taking sides? To heal rather
than bomb? Where were our highly prized diplomats?
They failed. The war will continue. Even after our
devastating bombing, their battle and pain will
rage on.
(a thinking and interested bystander)

We cannot allow injustice to prevail. If one man
rise up and commit pain and torture on another,
all of us must join together to rise up and stop
the atrocity. The intention in Kosovo was to stop
murder, by removing "things" not killing people.
People died, yes. But how many more would be
killed if we hadn't responded. How many would be
living in fear for the rest of their lives?

WAR AND PEACE
"War is unthinkable in a society of autonomous
people who have discovered the connectedness of
all humanity, who are unafraid of alien ideas and
alien cultures, who know that all revolutions
begin within and that you cannot impose your brand
of enlightenment on anyone else... "In a rich,
creative, meaningful environment there is no room
for hostility... "If we limit ourselves to the
old-paradim concept of averting war, we are trying
to overpower darkness rather than switching on the
light. If we reframe the problem--if we think of
fostering community, health, innovation,
self-discovery, purpose--we are already engaged in
waging peace."

THOMAS JEFFERSON
"Jefferson made two other separations (in addition
to Bill of Rights and First Amendment) related to
church and state: governmental law from church or
religious sources and public education from church
influence. He was firmly committed to the rule of
human-made law in government. He got his idea from
Lord Blingbroke's writings (and John Locke's).
Rule by God's law meant theocracy, whereas
human-made law meant democracy--and Jefferson was
a thoroughgoing advocate of democracy in the form
of a republic... "History teaches us that men and
women have fought and died when their religion was
repressed or overwhelmed by their government (or
any invader) --or if they did not fight, they did
not support their government in times of crises...
"Since its inception, the United States has never
had a religious war despite divisive sectarian
differences. And in times of crisis, minority
religions have supported the government because it
has, for the most part, maintained a position of
neutrality among its many religions and
denominations. "...(Jefferson's) religious freedom
law causes all religious groups to be seen and
treated equally in the eyes of the law--or, as
Jefferson put it, has the effect of 'putting all
on equal footing'."

Philosophical Wall of Separation" by Allen Jayne,

RECONCILIATION BETWEEN RELIGIIONS
Ivan, Tell me what do you think of this article?
"...Baha'u'llah declared the necessity of peace
among the nations and the reality of
reconciliation between the religions of the world.
He announced that the fundamental basis of all
religion is one, that the essence of religion is
human fellowship and that the differences in
belief which exist are due to dogmatic
interpretation and blind imitations which are at
variance with the foundations established by the
Prophets of God. He proclaimed that if the reality
underlying religious teaching be investigated all
religions would be unified, and the purpose of
God, which is love and the blending of human
hearts, would be accomplished." (`Abdu'l-Baha:
Promulgation of Universal Peace, p. 354)
mailto:icava@juno.com
* * * * * * Ivan's reply:
Dear Isaac, Alas, this is easier said than done.
In the end, from my observations, people are
attached to the fundamental tenets of their
religion, even if sometimes in unrealistic ways.
Take for example the idea of reincarnation. For
the Hindus and Buddhists, this is a real part of
their religion, and they are loathe to give it up.
Or take charity, which the Christians claim to
champion, but some religions may find it to be
counterproductive. ie: Why give money to beggars?
Why is charity important? etc... So the problems
run pretty deep, because of these differences of
belief. The only solution I can envision for the
future of Unity of Religion is to find common
grounds, and then to exploit the similarities for
the purpose of encouraging tolerance towards one
another's belief. If a Christian or Moslem is
really attached to his Heaven, and the Hindu to
reincarnation, then let them have them. And if
after death either one gets lost and ends up in
the others spiritual reality, then let him realize
that the universe may be big enough to accommodate
all beliefs, even those that entertain the absurd.
That is the ultimate freedom, isn't it? I think
this is why the wise fathers of this country, and
the contemporary thinkers of the time, labored to
create a civil social order that separates church
and state. Then each person within such a social
system has the freedom to believe and worship as
they see fit, provided they live within the
accepted confines of their society's laws. Not so
easy for a Moslem fundamentalist, for example,
since some of our laws are counter to their
practices, but we all manage. Think of Orthodox
Jews and what difficulties they have living in a
secular society like America, and yet they do. So
I agree with Baha'u'lla's contention that if we
studied the underlying fundamental teachings of
all the world's great religious teachers,
manifestation, etc. we would come to a similar
conclusion, that God is Love. But the gap between
all religions is still too great, and that's why
we need those small bridges, like the wonderful
quotes you found in common to the world's great
religions dealing with Peace and Love and the Gold
Rule. The other solution is to go the secular
route, one taken by America's founding fathers. In
the end, we may discover that religion as we now
know it today may become an anachronism in the
future, without bloody loyalties and warfare, and
people will learn to live in peace with each
other's beliefs like a kaleidoscope of spiritual
experiences valid for each and every human being.
That is a form of religion in itself. I hope this
answers your question. Take care, Ivan

World Peace Treaty
We, as citizens of the planet earth, and as
children of the Reality of Love known as God,
Yahweh, Allah, Jah, and the Great Mother, Divine
Light, and many other names, hereby commit
ourselves to observe the following ideals,
established for the benefit of all beings.
1. We agree to establish peace, both inner and
outer, as our highest ideal. By choosing this
ideal in every relationship and undertaking we
agree to assist humanity in the shift from a world
based on the rules of fear to the laws of love.
2. We agree to work for peace in every possible
way. Both within ourselves and within the world.
In doing so we take an active part in the
transformation of humanity form the competitive
ideologies that are the cause of war to more
harmonious relationships that are the cause of
peace.
3. We agree to assist others in the pursuit of
these same ideals. In doing so we recognize that
we are one in the consciousness, and that the
benefit of one leads to the benefit of all.
4. We agree to accept the guidance of all
beneficent celestials, all the angels and the
emissaries who have come to assist us in this
transformation. By surrendering to their guidance
we move closer to the reality of love they
represent.
5. We agree to actively release the fearful,
separating thought forms that have bound us to the
destructive patterns through which we view each
other and the world. By releasing these patterns
we make room for new ideas that nurture our
relationships rather than destroy them. We will no
longer wait for the leaders of the world to make
these choices for us, recognizing that for them to
be real, binding and lawful, we must make them
ourselves. Therefore, we establish this treaty of
peace for the benefit of humanity and take full
responsibility for the work it entails. By signing
this treaty we make a solemn oath to transform our
lives to reflect these ideals, knowing that the
world itself will be transformed as we change our
minds about the world. We claim this reality NOW,
knowing that reality is activated first in mind,
then in the world. And through our collective
decision, we envision and create a new world,
transformed by the love and commitment this treaty
embodies. It is done, and it is done through each
one of us.

A dedication to human rights
Physicist/human rights activist
Andrei Sakharov, 1921-1989
The Internet has brought incredible gifts of
self-expression to many people in the world, but
as we celebrate and defend online freedom, we
should remember that this is a very special
condition of our circumstances. Not everyone in
the world enjoys the freedom we are sharing right
now. Many people in the world have to endure the
indignity of forced silence, the fear of violence,
the dread of arrest, the despair of imprisonment,
the pain of torture, or the destruction of their
natural environment. Will history record the
Internet revolution as the beginning of a new age
of human freedom and human rights, or as the
beginning of an irreversible global inequality in
access to information and discourse? The choices
we make now will determine the answer.

KOSOVO WAR, is it over? (see above entries: May 22
& June 23, 1999)
Chaos and Intolerance Now Reign in Kosovo Despite
U.N.'s Efforts
The reality of revenge and intolerance is eroding
the United Nations' goal of multiethnicity, and
the only multiethnic organization actually
functioning in any way is the nascent police
force, where a few of the 170 or so cadets
graduated thus far are Serbs or members other
minorities. It would be wonderful enough,
officials say, if the people here would simply
stop killing one other or turning away as others
kill, and manage at least to live side by side.
But no one expects that happy prospect any time
soon.
"It is hard to come to help and find that you are
perceived sometimes as an enemy, and not just by
the Serbs but also by the Albanians who we came to
defend," he said. "Every failure, every
assassination, every murder here is a victory for
Milosevic."

WHY WAR?
War is, because those who need to change and
cannot, do so by force to punish those who have,
and become punished themselves, to change. This is
true of all violence, until we change.

CHINA, HUMAN RIGHTS CHAMPIONS?

How can we make China, a nation of very political
human beings, into champions of Human Rights? It
has already happened in Europe, the US, India,
even in the new Iran, to a degree. Why not China
with a new Cultural Revolution of Human Rights?
It would revolutionize the world.
